A great clamor arose from outside. Cid opened the shutters. A huge whale sat out front in the desert sands.
"Hey Grandpa! Are you ready with the equipment yet?"
*****
"There you go, she's all ready. The crane is installed, and I've been able to reroute some of the wires, so now I've been able to make a little more room inside. I figure that you can use the cranes next time you take off, and after having an airship inside, the whale will have about 300 square feet for cargo. You have crew quarters for twenty people, but if you sleep in shifts, you can fit... maybe 35 people in there," Cid rattled off.
"Thanks Grandpa," Celes said, smiling.
"No prob... cough... no problem."
"Grandpa. Are you alright?"
"Yes, yes. I'm just getting a little... old." He seemed to shudder at the thought.
"Do you want to come along? Have another adventure?" Celes tried to offer anventure once again to her "Grandpa".
"No, actually, Edgar wants me to stay here. He wants me to build some airships for him. He wants them called the same name they were called many years ago... the Red Wings!" Cid seemed happy to be useful.
"Alright. If you say so..." Celes thought.
*****
Celes knocked on the door. "Rosa... Are you in there?"
"Just a second." Rosa came out of the room. "Isn't this place wonderful? This Edgar person, he's given us every comfort. Plus, that Cid person seems as skilled with mechanics as the Cid I knew ever was." Rosa said, "I'm going to like this century."
"Well, the high-and-mighty king might be coming with us on our journey. Figure in... maybe, a half-dozen old friends on the moon, you, me, Edgar and Rydia, and we have ten people. Then I'm pretty sure Cyan would be at his castle, that gives us eleven, and..." Celes started.
"Hold it." Rosa interrupted. "If you broke this Whale out of its "sleep" just so you could see your friends again...."
"No. I told you, we have to get to the moon. Then, we see if everything is alright and maybe even start a trade agreement while we're at it..."
"You're power-crazed." Rosa giggled like a little girl.
"If you want to see power-crazed, talk to Emperor Edgar," Celes said with a cryptic smile.
*****
"Good-bye. See you all later," Cid called out.
The Big Whale flew once again.
POP! Another balloon deflated.
"What magic is that?" Rosa asked, fighting a Grenade.
"I don't know. It's connected to this crystal. When I feel different, my sword seems to reflect it. By the way, how come you still have your magic?"
"I think it has to do with guarding the crystal of flight inside the Big Whale."
*****
Celes was way ahead of Rosa. She said she had to stop off and visit some old friends in a cave nearby. Oh well, she'd just wait for her.
Celes carefully picked her way through the debris of the Crystal Palace. She wondered what had happened to it.
A sound, behind her.
She turned, and found herself face-to-mask with a ninja. "Who are you?" they both asked.
"It doesn't matter. What is your business here? I must ask you to leave if you can't give me a good answer."
A male, Celes reasoned. No older than twenty-five. This would be a piece of cake. "I am here to find an old friend of mine."
"BUZZZ! Wrong answer! I was one of the last people to visit this planet, and no human has been here since. You must leave now, or I'll have to hurt you, as much as I would hate to hurt someone like yourself."
"Sorry. I'm not going anywhere." She turned to walk away. The ninja leapt quickly, and was on the other side of her, blocking her passage, before she had taken five steps.
"Alright then, you asked for it." He drew two swords. This would be fun.
Celes drew her Rune Blade. CLANG! His two swords against Celes' one. "Fire3!" It hit the ninja full in the chest, and knocked one of his swords away from him. He had obviously been caught off guard. Celes charged. The swords hit again. They were standing less than two feet apart now, and neither could still get the upper hand.
He was reaching into his pocket. Probably a throwing weapon, like Shadow had. Now what could she do? A thought flashed in her mind. Sure, it had worked on Wren's assistant. Why not?
She kneed him in the groin. He stumbled backward, tripped over some rock, and fell to the floor. Celes ran over, kicked the sword out of his hand, put one foot on him, and put her sword just centimeters above his throat.
"Celes! What are you doing?" a familiar voice called out.
"Rydia!"
"You're hurting Edge!"
Celes couldn't help but smile. She took her foot off him.
"I don't know about you, Rydia, but my male friends can actually beat people up."
"This is that Celes person?!?!"
"This is Celes, the girl I've been telling you about."
FuSoYa appeared from the same entrance as Rydia, and was coming over now, wanting to see the first human to visit the moon in centuries.
Just then Rosa stepped into the room. She ran over to Celes, and watched her pick up Edge off the floor. "Still all talk and no fight, eh Edge?"
"Rosa!" Rydia and Edge cried in unison.
"Chosen One, why are you here?" FuSoYa asked.
"Chosen one?" Celes asked.
"I was chosen to guard the Big Whale." Rosa replied.
"The Big Whale is here?" Rydia said with a smile.
"We'll talk about the present later. Right now we all have more catching up to do."
*****
"But Golbez was going to the blue planet," FuSoYa said. "Why should we go?"
"I think there has to be a way to permanently re-establish magic, and we just have to find it. If you want the most current information, Earth is where to go."
"All right, Chosen One, I'm going," FuSoYa replied.
"Then I'm going too," Rydia said.
"Well, I really think I'm needed more here, but I have to protect Rydia from this crazy woman here." Edge gestured to Celes.
"That's nice of you, Edge, but who is going to protect me from you?"
Celes and Rosa both laughed.
"I guess we're all going now."
"That Celes... she's a much greater warrior than I ever thought her to be. But that's my way, though... always jumping into bigger things that I can't handle. Still, I can't help but wonder... maybe it's just that I'm losing my skill... my edge above my enemies..."
Edge turned to look at FuSoYa.
"And him, the Lunar. Where was he when I needed him? And why have both he and Golbez been awakened?" Edge's face became twisted with anger. "And WHY did Golbez abandon us on the moon?" Edge slammed his fist on the console. He then looked about, hoping no one noticed.
Edge swirled about in his chair to gaze upon Rosa.
"Hmm. There's not much to say about her; she and I never really got along too well. I wonder why she's been assigned to guard the Big Whale? I mean, she IS... or WAS... Queen of Baron. One would think that to be a larger responsibility than watching over a buried airship." Edge shrugged.
"And Rydia. It warms my heart to see her again... but I can't help but wonder why she left the Land of Summoned Monsters... I always thought she'd be happiest there."
"The world has been thrown for a loop, no doubt about it. And all I could do was sit underground and watch. Now we're floating miles and miles above the Blue Planet in search of hell-knows-what, and all I'm doing here is watching some blinking lights."
"I was defeated in single combat. My world was destroyed about me. My long-lost friends have come back for no apparent reason. We're drifting about in space, searching for some unknown 'threat'."
"Beats being home."
Edge managed a smile under his mask.
"I wonder..."
Curious, Edge decided to toy with the various controls of the sensor system, setting up a sensor sweep of the Blue Planet. What was revealed to him, he kept to himself. He felt the burning sensation of rage and revenge welling up inside him.
Golbez's ship had crash-landed on the planet below. And he was alone.
"You will give me an explanation, Golbez," Edge swore to himself, "And then you will die."
Edge clenched his fist, and returned the sensors to continuous scan.
The throned figure spoke. "The storm served its purpose. The ship is lost, and Locke is no more."
"Then why call me here, Master?" Kharazz was beginning to feel... curious. Yes.
"There is another problem. The Big Whale has been awakened."
He stood mute for only a moment. "By whom, Master?"
"Celes. She has recovered her magic, and has rallied the white wizardess and the ancient Caller of Mist to her side. She is on the moon as we speak."
"And you wish me to...?"
"Remove the Big Whale. And eliminate Celes, or her magic, if it is convenient."
Kharazz bowed. "Of course, Master. Surely you do not forget who, and what, I am."
"You never cease to remind me. Go, Fiend of Shadow. Support your boasts with action."
Kharazz nodded. "The fiends of times past may have failed, but I and my brethren have more power. I will not fail you, Master."
His only answer was a low chuckle from the throne above him.
Invisible within his shadow, he studied the crew of this ancient Lunarian vessel. There was the Lunar, FuSoYa. In times past, the ancient one would have sensed his presence easily. But he was nothing without his magic, which was fading rapidly. FuSoYa would be helpless against him.
The golden-haired woman... she was the one who had helped the Paladin destroy Zeromus so many centuries ago. Her magic seemed to linger on, and her skill with a bow was not insignificant. Still, if he felled her before she had the chance to cast White, he would win. He could use his Shadow Shroud to block her white magic.
Near her was the Caller. She might just be the most dangerous of them, he mused. Bahamut and Leviathan answer her calls. I must take care not to confront her directly. Perhaps I can cloud her mind with Illusion, make her think one of the others is her enemy?
Dismissing her, he turned to the object of his mission, the ex-Knight Celes. That sword registered as roughly equivalent to the Illumina, but fortunately it was not a blade of Light. Illumina would have been deadly to Kharazz. Her magic was less troublesome. The flame spells would be dangerous, but if he could act first...
It all depended on his ability to strike first, he realized. If he did not, he could not defeat all of these at once. And from past indication, Celes would not split from these others. She would gather more allies. There were combinations he could not defeat. He had to strike soon... but not yet.
He turned his attention to the last member. A masked man... Could this be the ninja Edge, of Eblan? Still alive, after all this time? Incredible. He sensed... something. Hate. Anger. Yes. He could use this man. Eblan's king would be his instrument to defeat Celes and destroy the Big Whale. He was not Jardek, the Fiend of Mind, but he could do just as well.
He chuckled in amusement as he stepped further into the shadow and travelled from the Big Whale to his lair in the Land of Darkness. He would plan carefully, this time. This time, he would be victorious.
Kharazz, the Master of Shadows, laughed at the darkness.
Hoping everyone's attention was elsewhere, Edge creeped over to the wall adjacent to the console. Little was there, not even dust. The shadow of the console filled the space where Edge examined. "It might have been my imagination," Edge thought, "but I doubt it. Not much I can do about it now."
Hours passed. Little was spoken, almost as if everyone was in a trance. Everyone was focused on their stations, waiting for something, anything to happen. This waiting grated on Edge's nerves... a lot. Edge sighed.
"I don't remember this trip taking such a long time. There must be something wrong..." Edge looked about the room, examining everyone. " FuSoYa seems to know what he's doing, he DID make the ship and all. I don't think there's anyone with a brighter soul than Rosa... and Rydia... I just couldn't accept that Rydia could do wrong. The only one I can't trust here is Celes. Everyone else helped me defeat the Prime Evil, Zeromus. Now, it seems that this woman marches into our lives and orders us around like she's some kind of Queen. What giver her that right?"
What indeed... hissed a voice.
Edge spun around, and faced his console. Nothing there.
Rydia turned from her station to look at Edge. "Is there something wrong, Edge? You look uptight."
Edge gripped the console so that his knuckles turned white. "No, nothing at all, Rydia." Edge managed a weak smile. "Just bored."
"You're sure?"
"Couldn't be surer... heh heh." Edge returned his attention to the console, breaking Rydia's gaze. Rydia smiled cutely behind Edge's back and resumed her work at her station. "I betcha it's space sickness," she giggled to herself. "Not that he'd admit it."
"Something is amiss," Edge thought. Again, he examined the area around his console. Nothing. Shaking his head, Edge went back to work.
You are correct, Edge...
"Correct?" Edge spoke aloud. "Correct about what?"
Celes cannot be trusted.
"And what makes you say that, whatever you are?" Edge's voice became louder.
Hearing Edge, Rosa left her station to approach him. As she drew nearer, Edge seemed to back away.
"What is the matter with you, Edge?" Rosa looked genuinely concerned. "You look pale..."
"Must be the poor lighting," Edge murmured. Rosa noted that there was almost a wild look to Edge's eyes. "Now go back to your station. You are needed there more than here."
Rosa's eyes grew wide with surprise. "Well," she said coldly, "If that's the way you feel about it..." she spun about and stalked back to her post.
"Rosa... that's not what I... oh, never mind."
Don't worry about her. Celes should concern you more.
Edge inhaled sharply, then exhaled slowly. "Who are you?" he said to no one in particular.
A concerned friend.
"You're no friend of mine. I don't recognize you."
Surely you'd recognize a fellow Hero of Light...?
A form stepped into view from the shadows. About Edge's height, he wore a suit of armour that almost gleamed in the lights of the Big Whale. Almost. His bright violet hair could be seen from under his helmet, and a sword with a blade of obsidian crystal hung at his side.
"Cecil...?" Edge whispered.
Yes. It's me, old friend. But I fear I cannot stay long.
"Hey, everyone!" yelled Edge. "Look, it's Cecil!" Edge pointed to what appeared to be empty space.
Rosa frowned. "That's not funny, Edge. Not funny at all."
"Who's kidding? Can't you see him?" Edge appeared frantic.
FuSoYa set the Big Whale on auto and stepped forward, locking his gaze on Edge. "I sense that you are distressed, Ninja Edge. I feel that you should take a rest. I can monitor the sensors from the bridge." FuSoYa smiled, something he rarely did.
"I'm fine..." Edge said through gritted teeth, "It's the rest of you that are distressed..." Edge shuddered with rage.
"Calm yourself, child." FuSoYa grabbed on to Edge's arm.
"I can escort MYSELF to the rest chambers, THANK YOU." Edge stalked out of the room, scattering various pieces of equipment on his exit. Celes approached Rydia. She did not look impressed.
"Is he always like this, Rydia?"
"Not normally, Celes... I think the long trip is getting to him. He should be fine after he calms down."
"How could you stand to have him on your team? He's not that great a warrior to begin with; he has an awful attitude, and an obvious disregard for things that are important. Were he in MY command, he'd have been out of here LONG ago."
Rydia bristled under Celes's harsh tone. "Edge is a good friend, Celes... please don't judge him by the way he acts. Given the chance, he'll pull through. I guarantee it."
"I'll take your word for it, Rydia."
****
Edge hopped onto one of the beds that had been installed in the old version of the Big Whale. Edge uttered a verbal command, "Lights off," adn the room grew dark. Edge lay back on the bed, and tried to relax.
Relax, friend. All will be fine.
"You're still here!" Edge exclaimed.
Yes, and only you can see me. I'm sorry I didn't tell you before.
"That's OK, Cecil. Now, what's the problem?"
I'm here to warn you about Celes.
"I KNEW she was trouble!" Edge slammed a fist into his open palm.
She had been awakened by Golbez to escort you and the others into
danger. Golbez knows that you are on to him, and he wants the Heroes of
Light to be destroyed. So, he sent Celes to gather Rydia and anyone else
she could find and collect them on the Big Whale.
"But why?"
Your current course, Edge, is the Sun. FuSoYa is not aware of this
fact. Genius that he is, he is not a proficient astral navigator. He won't
know that you're all headed to the Sun until it's much too late.
"But won't Celes be destroyed as well?"
Golbez cares not. Celes is cannon fodder to him.
"Where are you now, Cecil? Why didn't Golbez get to you?"
Golbez crashed on the planet below in a place known as the Veldt.
I am some distance from him. I intend to track him down and put a stop to
him, brother or no.
Hurry, Edge. Defeat Celes before all is lost.
Cecil faded from view.
"Don't worry, Cecil. I won't let you down."
Edge took his swords from their storage compartment, and
fingered the Orb shard in his vest pocket.
"Now that I have magic, Celes..."
Edge struck out with Murasame. It neatly cleaved the top off
a bedpost, which fell to the ground with a thump.
"... you do not have a prayer."
******
The Fiend of Shadow grinned in triumph.
"And neither do you, Caller Rydia."
Edge entered the Lotus position and began his breathing exercises.
"Now, what is my best chance of victory here? What advantages does
Celes have over me? ... I can only think of one... her magic. That is where
I must strike first."
Edge awoke from his trance, feeling somewhat refreshed. Looking at
the chronometer, he gathered that he had been out for a good hour. "And
now, Celes, the beginning of your end."
Silently, Edge creeped out of the sleeping quarters and took a quick
survey of the Control Room. Everyone was still stationed at their posts.
"This might be more difficult than I thought."
Edge began his approach. Slowly, s-l-o-w-l-y, Edge slid across the
deck of the Big Whale. "Think invisible, and they will not see you," Edge
told himself.
Edge dove, then tumbled across the deck between FuSoYa and Rosa.
Almost as quickly, Edge sprung for cover behind one of the consoles. Rosa
looked over her shoulder, shrugged, and returned her attention to her
console.
"Heh, not bad, old-timer." Edge smirked to himself.
Without warning, Rydia walked over to inspect the console which Edge
had hidden himself behind. A trickle of sweat fell down Edge's face.
"Hoo boy, gotta love a challenge. I need a distraction..." Edge
withdrew a shiny coin from his pouch, and peeked out from around the
console. "Ah, yes! That should get her attention." Edge took aim, and
flung the coin at the console opposite himself. The coin struck a large
button, and the cabin filled with the sound of an alarm.
"Rydia!" Celes shouted, "Check your post!"
Blushing, Rydia scurried back to her own console. "Sorry, Celes."
Grinning, Edge focused his attention on Celes's pouch, and what it
contained. The shard of Orb that granted her magic.
Edge cracked his knuckles. "Now, let's see if I still have it."
Swifter than the eye could follow, Edge brushed past Celes's
distracted form. When her reached the other side of the cabin, Edge checked
his hands.
Clutched within was Celes's Orb shard.
"Yes!" Edge silently congratulated himself.
The sirens stopped. Rydia had gotten whatever had caused them back
under control.
"Just be careful next time, Rydia." Celes smiled, and put a
reassuring hand on Rydia's shoulder. Celes then returned to her own station.
"Don't worry, Celes. It won't happen again." Rydia wiped the sweat
off her brow. "I can't let myself get distracted so easily," she thought.
"Everyone's counting on me to do my job."
Everyone's attention diverted back to their stations, it took little
effort for the stealthy Ninja to return to his quarters.
"Now, we play the waiting game." Edge curled up in his bed.
It was then that he heard someone approach.
Quickly, Edge pocketed the newly-obtained shard of Orb, and decided
to surprise the interloper.
"What is it, Celes?"
"Jidoor. It seems destroyed. At least, that's what the sensors say.
And..."
None of the others needed to ask what else Celes was going to say, since
the viewscreen said it for her. A bolt of light lanced out from Figaro
Castle, hitting Doma; seconds later, Doma began to crumble. Everyone
aboard the Big Whale stared at the viewscreen, some startled at this turn
of events, one experiencing a sickening sense of deja vu.
Rydia was the first to speak up. "Who would do a thing like that?"
"That's impossible..." Celes muttered. "Only Kefka's Light of Judgement
could do that. And Edgar wouldn't... unless someone else is in control of
Figaro..."
"Well, obviously SOMEONE did," Rosa replied tartly.
"Not Edgar!" Celes almost shouted back. Lowering her voice a bit, she
continued, "But whoever did will pay."
"Hold it. We have to get our priorities in order here. If Figaro is
really behind this, what can we expect?" FuSoYa was trying to calm
everyone down.
"Well, they have an army of purple, black, and yellow chocobos. Along
with their ground army. They also have that strange beam, and Cid said he
was going to start building airships for them, from the design of the Red
Wings," Celes said.
"The Red Wings! Great!" Rydia cried.
"That's alright, we can take them," Rosa said. "We have the Big Whale,
remember?"
"No, Chosen One. Just because we are stronger does not mean we can win.
We are one, they are many," FuSoYa said.
"But with its increased power..." Rosa started.
"No! The Giant of Bab-il was stronger than us all, yet we defeated it,
because it was one and we were many. We now need allies to help us."
FuSoYa said.
"Forget it. Before this whole thing started more than two years ago,
Doma, Figaro, and Vector were the most powerful places. Now Doma is gone
and Vector was crushed a year ago." Celes said.
"Then we must gather allies from the other towns. We must get all your
friends to unite and fight against this evil," FuSoYa said.
"Wait. I believe there are more of us too. I sensed others. Edge, Rosa,
you, Golbez, and another. It was hard to make out but I think it was
Cecil." Rydia said.
"Cecil!" It was pretty clear Rosa was happy her love was still alive.
"Where is he?"
"I don't know. I think he was in... Jidoor."
"Jidoor?" Rosa's heart fell.
"Let's get ready to take off. We need all the help we can get," FuSoYa
said.
"Hey, wait... where's Edge?" Rydia said.
*****
"Hey, look!" Rosa said. On the viewscreen was none other than Cid himself.
He was being chased by soliders of Figaro, and was at the top of one of
the towers of Figaro.
"It's too late. If we land, they'll be on us in seconds, and we can't
pick up Cid any other way," Celes said, going faster anyway.
"I have an idea." Rosa, from her console, took the ship to its maximum
speed. She then fired a shot right underneath where Cid was standing.
"ROSA! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" Celes shouted, trying to regain control of
the ship.
"I'm trying a trick I learned from an old friend."
She took the ship down; it was only a few feet off the ground. She
glanced at an automated timer she had set to go off when they passed the
tower. She closed her eyes. "If Cid can do it, I can." She flipped the
Whale on its side, opened the hatch. They were going too fast; they would
have to slow down to catch Cid.
The others were falling out of their seats, hanging on for their lives.
She managed to slow it. Thump! That was Cid. Two more presses, and the
ship turned right side up and the hatch closed. She had done it.
"They're going to fire!" Rydia said.
Rosa pressed the button for the crystal. So what if they slammed into a
mountain? Same result as if they were hit by the beam. She activated
the crystal. And set a new course as quickly as she could.
*****
The Big Whale was floating out in space, as the people talked to Cid.
"Forget it. guys! I finished the last of the five ships a few days ago.
You'd need an army to defeat the Figaro army now."
"Maybe, but I have a better idea. We need to get everyone together again,
and we need upgrades to the Whale," FuSoYa said.
"But I just..." Cid protested.
"No. Human technology at this time is too... inferior. I have a better
way." FuSoYa stood, went to the controls, and pointed the ship away from
the Blue Planet. "We're going to the fourth planet of this system."
Cutting FuSoYa off in mid-sentence, Edge interjected, "FuSoYa, you
are the man driving this boat. Where are we headed?"
FuSoYa turned to look at Edge, obviously not accustomed to being cut
off. "After we rescue Cid, I intend to take this 'boat' to the fourth
planet of this system. It is there, I believe, we can find some answers."
Edge's eyes went wide, and only nodded in acknowledgement.
"Well, I hope you enjoy the trip," Edge thought. "I have more
important things to do."
The discussion went underway once more. Edge, however, wanted no
part of it. So he decided to politely disappear, back to his sleeping
quarters. No one seemed to notice his exit.
"I can't leave here without warning my friends." Edge picked up a
clipboard from under his bed, and began to write.
Tossing the now-complete document on Rydia's bed, Edge returned to
the entrance to the sleeping quarters. It was then that the ship suddenly
lurched sideways.
The Rover Star was a massive and ancient warship from times before even
Livouf Takar. It was formed from a star, and would merely engulf its
foes. Many a ship had succumbed to its force, and the Big Whale would
be no different.
And so it came.
"FuSoYa!" A male, seemingly, turned around. Celes could give herself no
estimate of his/its age, since she had never seen a being of his type
before.
FuSoYa and Flemme entered into a long talk in some foreign language. The
others crowded around and waited for FuSoYa to tell them what was going
on.
*****
Celes smiled as she laid in a course for Earth. The Big Whale had had its
weapons and armory upgraded. It was now a formidible fighting machine.
The question now was: would that be enough?
Celes glanced back at the others on board and smiled. It looked as though
they had accepted her as a friend. Rydia, Rosa, Cid, FuSoYa, herself,
they were all in this together. At least, she thought so...
*****
The airships flew at them. The Big Whale could easily outdistance them,
no problem. It was much easier to flee than fight. Maybe they might be
able to pick them off, one by one, later.
They had damaged some of the ships, but had been hit pretty hard
themselves. Even with the new equipment, this was going to be a hard job.
Celes somehow knew that sometime, they would find their weakness and
destroy them.
But not now. The Figaro air force was strong. It included two different
types of chocobos, and now, five airships. How would they be able to
attack them?
*****
"Alright." FuSoYa started. They were now standing in the small room which
used to hold the crystal. A map of the world was spread out on a small
table in the center.
The Big Whale was hovering in outer space, above Kohlingen. All power not
needed for air recycling or such systems was devoted to sensors; maybe
they could get it to find someone. Anyone.
"Here's the highlights of our plan. One: we need to get help. Two: we
need to defeat the Red Wings. Three: we need some way to get into Figaro
Castle without the guards knowing. Four: we need to find out if it really
is Edgar that is doing this, and if it isn't, we need to destroy the being
that is. Here's how we can do it: the computer can finish with the sensor
sweep soon, then we'll be able to find others to help us. Cid, will you
brief us on the Red Wings?"
"Certainly. There are three different types of Red Wings. The first,
which I'll call type A, is the strongest all-around. It is medium in
speed, strength, defense, and agility. It traditionally flew as the lead
ship. The second, type B, has more emphasis on strength and defense.
There were two of them that flew behind the lead ship. Type C has an
emphasis on speed and agility. It flew on the wings. It was usually the
first to fly into battle, since it could weaken a ship while dodging many
of its shots. Then type B would fly in, attacking them. It would usually
take the first onslaught of the ships. Type A would finish the job. I
would suggest striking the Type B's before they break formation. That
will weaken their main attack systems."
"Thank you, Cid. As for part three of the plan, we need to get in once
we've destroyed their main forces. I would suggest trying..."
He was cut off by a beeping. They all ran to the sensors array. There was
something coming toward them.
Actually, five somethings. "Look at this, the airships are headed right
for us!" Celes said.
"They're gonna kill themselves. Hooray!" Rydia was actually jumping up and
down.
"Wait, they're firing. Quick, get the..."
Five blasts rocked the ship.
Since there was no force to stop the ship, it wouldn't stop moving. They
were flying away from the planet, and if they didn't get the ship
stabilized, they could fly anywhere.
"We have to..." Celes jumped up.
Two more blasts.
Everyone was flung every which way.
Celes hit the side of the sensors station and was knocked unconscious,
blood started trickling down her forehead.
Rydia slammed into the viewscreen, sliding to the floor.
FuSoYa fell back into the engineering station, bounced off it, and fell to
the floor.
Rosa and Cid hit each other, and were both sent over the top of tactical.
Cid fell against the chair, getting hurt badly on the head. Rosa tumbled
over the top, and fell to the floor, almost lifeless.
"Warning: temperature reaching extreme levels," the computer bleeped.
The viewscreen changed to show what their course was.
And it now displayed the sun.
"Shit!" She jumped to her feet, closed her eyes and called out "WARP!"
It didn't work. "WARP!" she cried again. Her necklace - it was gone. No
time to find it now, just get Rydia's orb. She ran over to the semi-
conscious Rydia. She checked her pockets - no orb. Where was it?
She shook Rydia. "WHERE'S THE ORB!"
"Ugnh.... My... room."
Celes took off. Rydia's room. Rydia's room. It was imposible to stand.
She had to consciously think about moving her feet. Left foot, right
foot, left foot, right foot. She scrambled halfway to crew quarters. She
wasn't going to make it. She scrambled back to the ship's controls. She
had to get the ship out of the path of the sun. She pressed a few
buttons. Had to get the ship away from the sun. She was able to change
the direction a little, but would it be enough?
She wasn't going to wait and find out. The ship was flying on its side
now. She was standing on what used to be the left wall of the crystal
room. She was going to have to somehow jump over all the debris and other
things if she was going to make it.
She counted to three and jumped. Landed just past the last of the debris.
Safe! Not out of the woods yet, though. Rydia's room. Rydia's room.
Standing on what would be a wall, she tried to make her way across. Just
then, a letter fell into her hands. From Edge. She didn't want to know.
She tucked it in her pocket and moved on. She had to climb into Rydia's
room, but was finally able to get the orb. Back out now. She managed to
crawl on top of the debris. Over. Now get to the others. She did. Cast
the spell.
"WARP!"
*****
"So what do we do now, FuSoYa?" It had been about a day since they had
lost the Whale, and they were all still confused.
"I wish Edge were here; he'd know what to do."
Edge! Celes remembered the note. She took it out; it was somewhat burned
from the fires inside the whale, but not too bad. Still readable. What'd
it say...? To Rydia.
She handed it to her. "I found this while I was looking for the orb."
"Oh." Rydia took it, and read it. "Oh..." she whispered.
"What?" The others crowded around, trying to get a look.
Rydia held the letter against her. "No, don't try it."
"What's it say?" Rosa said.
"It explains why Celes couldn't find her orb shard," Rydia replied.
"It's long. It says more than that," Rosa said.
"From boyfriend Edge," Celes taunted.
"It's not that bad. Here, want me to read it?"
"Yes!" The others replied unamiously.
"Alright." Rydia cleared her throat.
I'm sorry.
My presence on the Big Whale would have caused open hostility
between Celes and myself. But don't you think that my aggression was
unjustified.
I did see Cecil, if no one else did. He warned me of Golbez's
plot.
Yes, Golbez.
He abandoned us on the Moon, Rydia. Left without even so much as
a good-bye. If Rosa hadn't have shown up to save us, I fear that we
would have been killed, without even little pieces of us to look for.
Celes is an agent of Golbez, sent to gather the Heroes of Light
together. Once together, he would have us all destroyed.
You may not be aware of it, but Celes intends to hurl the Big
Whale into the Sun. I know not if FuSoYa is aware of that fact. He
may be in charge of steering, but I think he's in for a real shock.
Please show this to everyone you deem worthy. As much as I don't
show it, I truly care for you, Rydia. And a plunge into the sun is no
fitting end for friends as noble as Rosa and FuSoYa.
In case you must resort to violence, be assured that I have taken
care of Celes's casting abilities. Do not worry. The shard is safe
with me.
Know this: I am somewhere on the Blue Planet, stalking Golbez. I
know where he is.
Do not try and stop me, Rydia. I may not return. Losing you
would be a far greater pain than being defeated in battle.
May the Light shine brightly,
Edge.
"Remind me to pound him next time I see him." Celes said, making a fist.
"The Big Whale was lost in the sun." FuSoYa's face was pale as he said
the words. "And you did think of calling the meeting, taking us away from
our stations."
"You don't really think that I..." Celes didn't want to finish the
sentence.
Rosa stepped up. "I believe you, Celes."
Rydia stepped up now. "So do I."
"You would never do something like that, Celes." Gogo stepped forward.
They all looked toward FuSoYa. "I have my doubts, I have my suspicions,
but if you say that you didn't do it, I believe you."
"Thanks, everybody," Celes said, smiling.
So he had travelled to stand once more in the Master's court,
before the throne. "It is done, Master."
"Elaborate."
Silently, Kharazz cursed. He had hoped that the Master would
interpret his words as the best news. But what he had done was surely
enough. "I deceived the Ninja King of Eblan, my Lord. He was almost
enraged enough to risk attacking Celes, but his anger turned unpredictably
toward one called Golbez. But," he added quickly, sensing his Master's
displeasure, "before he left her company, he stole from her the fragment
of the magical Orb which granted her her power. Celes is bereft of magic."
"Excellent. And the Lunarian vessel?"
Kharazz was not averse to taking credit for coincidence. "It was
heading for the sun, Lord. I believe it will be destroyed. Unfortunately,
I believe its crew also managed to flee, perhaps by the Caller's magic."
"This news... pleases me. Your sister, the Fiend of Light, should
be able to verify the destruction of the Big Whale. But I have a new task
for you, my most valuable servant..."
As Kharazz listened, a cold smile slowly spread across his face.
She was, she mused, exactly the opposite of her brother, yet
exactly equal in power. But that made sense. He was the Fiend of
Shadow; her domain was Light.
All of this took only a fraction of a second. Then, she
bowed before the Master, awaiting his commands.
He began to speak, and she manifested herself completely, to
enable her to listen to the words which, to her, were abysmally slow.
She only assumed this form when she had to listen or manipulate
physical objects.
Her brother preferred the form of a Dark Knight, like those of
old; she appeared instead as a tall, elegant woman with silver-white
hair, clad in a white gown. In this form, she could suppress her
aura of radiance to a dim glow that was unnoticable in normal light.
If only she could conceal herself at night...
Finally, the Master's words came. "Lorrithan."
She nodded. "My Lord. The Big Whale is indeed lost. It fell
into the sun, and even the greatest wizards of ancient Mysidia, working
as one, could not hope to retrieve it. With normal magic dead in this
world, it will not be seen again."
"Excellent. I have another task for you..."
And the Fiend of Light waited once more to serve the Darkness.
"We have one thing they don't... magic." Rydia pointed out.
"They have hundreds of things we don't... airships, an army, chocobo
legions for the land and two types for the air, a huge energy weapon..."
Celes started rattling off.
"Alright, so all we have to do is find the others. If we can get enough
strong magicians together they might be able to cast spells long enough to
keep the entire army at bay," Cid said.
"How do you figure?" Rosa asked.
"Simple. An Ultima spell lasts for about 10 seconds and uses about
2/25ths of a strong magician's magic. That means they can get twelve
casts off, and at ten seconds a piece, that makes 120 seconds. Two whole
minutes to get in, plus it would take its toll on the castle."
"A castle that can hide beneath the sands..." Celes said.
"So they have us outmanned, and outweaponed. Let's do what Yang whould
do..." Rosa said.
"Who? Yang?"
"Yang once almost got himself killed by sacrificing himself to stop a
weapon aimed at destroying the dwarfs. Let's do something like that. We
can disable their airships..." Rosa said.
"I agree with the Chosen One. They have too much power, so we shall take
it away, a little at a time." FuSoYa said.
Celes nodded. "Cid, were any of your plans left behind?"
"No. I destroyed them all when I tried to escape."
"Then they can't rebuild them..."
*****
"Ooomph." The guard hadn't seen a thing coming. Rydia rolled the
unconscious man over. "Come on, Rosa. Hurry up."
"Why do I have to do this part?"
"Because you lost the rock, scissors, paper game."
*****
"Yoo hoo, boys..." Rosa called out in her sexiest voice. The other
officer's uniform was a little too big for her, which made what she was
going to do even more difficult. She walked toward the two uniformed men.
"Hi there."
"Helllllo, Miss." This one looked about eighteen. Great, just what she
needed.
"Hello, ma'am." This one seemed more courteous. He was a little older,
maybe twenty-five.
She smiled, and turned toward the courteous one. "When do you get off
duty?"
"One o'clock. Wait for me."
She leaned a little closer. "How about now? Your friend can guard this
entrance by himself, can't he?" she whispered.
"Jack, you're on your own." He bowed to Rosa, and with a sweeping gesture
offered for her to go first.
The rest waited until he was thirty yards away. Far enough.
"Ungh!" Celes clubbed him on the head with the handle of her sword.
"Come on." FuSoYa said. "We don't have much time."
They started down the corridor.
Rydia looked back. "Be careful, Rosa, he's a dirty one."
*****
Celes gazed at the airship. "FALCON" was painted on the side in bright
red. It was quite majestic, and Celes wished they could steal it instead
of destroy it, but if Edgar's "Light of Judgement" didn't get them, the
other four airships would.
Her gaze followed the room. She counted eight guards. She had to assume
there were that many on the other side too. Four on sixteen. What would
Setzer say about those odds?
She thought they were good. "Fu?" She had come to calling FuSoYa that in
a crunch.
He looked. "Could be as many as two dozen, but looks more like sixteen.
Cid?"
"The Falcon was a wing ship. It was designed for speed, not strength. I
would suggest trying to knock it out quickly and run. You don't have to
destroy it, just damage it enough so it doesn't fly. They won't be able
to repair it."
"Think there's a chance we can sneak aboard and take it out from there?"
"No."
"Alright. Rydia, do your call thing."
"From the land of the summoned monsters, I call Bomb!"
The familiar balloon-like thing appeared. BOOM! The explosion rumbled
throughout the place. Rydia passed the orb to Celes, who cast Ultima, and
while it was mid-way through, tossed it to FuSoYa, who cast Meteo.
The airship was withstanding much of it. It could probably still fly.
But the others were upon them now. Celes drew her sword; Rydia, her whip.
"You two get out of here. We'll catch up."
The two women attacked. Their magic and keen weapon skill immediately
knocked three unconscious. Guards got behind them. No way out now.
Celes hacked her way into the middle. Backed herself up against a beam.
Then she got an idea. The support beam. It had been damaged by the
magic. She turned and started slicing with her sword. One hit, two,
three, four... it was really starting to cut into the weakened beam.
Rydia had the orb; no sense in her getting hurt.
"Rydia, cast Exit, NOW!" Celes said it so forcefully that she obeyed.
"Come on. Damn! Come on!"
Finally, her sword cut through. They'd never be able to rebuild this
airship! She dashed through the the scattering guards. She made it
halfway to the exit when she was hit by something. She fell to the floor.
*****
Rydia appeared. FuSoYa and Cid were there. Rosa was running toward them,
still wearing her uniform. "Where's Celes?"
"I don't know, but we better get out of here."
*****
"Ow! Shit!" Celes struggled to stand. Her leg had been hurt badly. At
least she had gotten away from the collapsing building.
"Tired... hurts... rest." Vague thoughts connected in her mind. She had
to stop. She was too tired.
She collapsed to the ground. Letting her arms and her good left leg
support her, she let her head droop and her eyes close. "Just... a...
little further," she thought. She looked up.
And saw four guards with swords pointed right at her...
