Are you running linux? Which kernel?  I seem to remember reading something
recently about changes to linux so the connection limit is no longer hard
coded into the kernel, it is run time configurable.  The other option is
to switch to OpenBSD, Solaris, etc. which don't have such limit, or to
hack or find a patch for the kernel such that you don't have that limit.
