downtime? How much down time is there for a new kernel? Mine is just a few
minutes for a reboot.

And, there are so MANY exploits to older kernels out there, you are living in a
glass house worried about the down time to implement better security. How much
down time will removing hacker's damage take?

not for this. I'm not happy with the machine as it is, but there's nothing I can do
about it, putting a new kernel in place just isn't an option.

The 5.x source packages refused to compile when they got to the modules section.
