Updating gcc on OS X is not something you do lightly; Apple maintains a 
modified version of the toolchain, and there are ABI compatibility 
issues.

On the other hand, 10.3 should already be using gcc 3.3/3.4, so unless 
he's coming from an older install and didn't run gcc_select, 
something's odd...
