Currently Nickserv says the following about using /ns link NICK:

In order to use this command, you must identify for your
current nickname (using the IDENTIFY command), and the
nickname to be linked must not currently be in use.

Can you update the last line to read:

nickname to be linked must not currently be in use and
not currently registered.

I have had several used to older services versions register and then try
to link and not understand why that wouldn't work.
